I grew up just a few miles east of the Everglades. Sawgrass, islands of mangroves, slash pines, and cypress trees were my forest. My childhood memories revel in the mysterious place. For many summers, I spent hot days swamp tramping and exploring the Everglades. My curiosity deepened in the mid-1980’s with a science fair project on Lake Okeechobee’s water quality. Two decades later, I am drawn again to her native landscape and inhabitants after witnessing the declining health of the Everglades. Native birds captured my attention as I walked the local wetlands and scrub areas. As the populations of birds decline, I feel a sense of urgency to record those who continue to call South Florida and the Everglades home. Regarded as predictors of climate change, the avian culture is speaking loudly with their declining population numbers. Presently, my curiosity is mixed with extreme concern. Without haste, I share my collection of fine art photographs from the bodies of work entitled, Avian Wilds, Primitive Pioneers, and Lake Okeechobee;  My campaign calls viewers to action for preservation and restoration of Florida’s native lands. My hope is by sharing the natural beauty of my home others will be inspired to reduce waste and water consumption.
